Unexplained pain, numbness, tingling and body consciousness. When talking about scoliosis deformity, these are some concerns presented by the affected individual. Simply talking about scoliosis, it is a lateral deviation or bending of the spinal column at either side. Rotation and twisting of the vertebra is called scoliosis.

An Overview

Before learning about what is scoliosis and how it occurs. Let us understand what is the normal alignment and outlook of a human vertebra. The human spine is made of rectangular bodies called vertebrae that are stacked over one another. When observed from the back, it appears to be a straight curve. However, in an individual affected with scoliosis, the curve appears to be either S or C shaped. It would give a look as if a person is bent or leaned more towards one side.

The different classes of scoliosis

Scoliosis can be classified broadly in three different categories ie. congenital, idiopathic and neuromuscular.

Idiopathic or unknown cause of scoliosis is defined when all the causal factors are excluded. Usually idiopathic scoliosis makes up 80% of all the cases. At the age of puberty, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is easily diagnosed.

Talking about congenital scoliosis, as the name suggests scoliosis present by birth. When there is an abnormal formation of vertebral body (one or more than one) at any location of the spine, it leads to scoliosis. Malformation leads to imbalances around the vertebral level that alters the normal curvature of spine. Due to this, a specified part of spinal column grows at relatively slower rate than rest of the spine. It gets detected at a younger age.

The third classification, ie. neuromuscular scoliosis develops as a secondary problem to currently existing muscular or neurological deviations in the individual. It encompasses conditions like cerebral palsy (CP), muscular dystrophy, any trauma of the spinal cord, spina bifida, atrophy of musculature around the spinal column. The concerning factor with neuromuscular scoliosis is that it has a faster progression relative to its other counterparts. Usually the last resort is opting for a surgical treatment in this class.

Visual signs in a person affected with scoliosis

  • The shoulders are at an uneven level. One shoulder rises above the other.
  • Hip of either side is hiked up more relative the other side.
  • Uneven waist line.
  • The skin is overly stretched at one side and is compressed in folds on the opposite side, ie the side where the person leans.
  • The head is not centered above the pelvic zone.
  • The arm height can be easily visualised to be different when the person is standing straight.
  • When the person bend forwards, one side appears to be elevated as compared to the other.

You can experience a multitude of symptoms. Usually there is a common complaint of discomfort experienced in mid back or lower back region. Also due to compromised chest cavity, the person can also experience breathing difficulties and fatigue after moderate exertion. Usually this is observed in idiopathic scoliosis. Due to overall impact of scoliotic deformity, each part of the body is more or less affected that deteriorates the person’s quality of life.

Diagnosis

Your Physiotherapist or Orthopedician can confirm your scoliosis through a X-ray imaging or CT or MRI scans. Also various assessment tools and tests are incorporated to confirm the presence of scoliosis.
