Drenched in this unending cycle of vague pain? Well, aging is something that happens to all. Hence comes the scenario of ‘Spondylosis’. The term spondylosis is nothing but degenerative changes due to wear and tear of all the components of the spine. Let’s further understand what is it, how it is caused and what you can do to treat spondylosis.

An Overview- Spondylosis

The term spondylosis has various implications. The progressive degeneration of various components of the spine is encompassed in spondylosis. It is a natural process of aging that involves the wearing and tearing of soft tissues, vertebrae and other components.

Spondylosis can be explained in two regions of the spine ie. the cervical and lumbar regions. Hence known as cervical spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis respectively.

CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

A cascade of degenerative changes occurs in the cervical spine that includes the intervertebral discs, ligaments of the cervical spine etc. is termed cervical spondylosis. Disc bulging or herniation could be an early precursor to cervical spondylosis. Cervical spondylosis manifests itself in three conditions ie. axial neck pain, cervical myelopathy and cervical radiculopathy.

  • Axial neck pain: one can experience severe neck stiffness, and pain while bending or rotating the neck. The pain is often relieved in the lying position when the neck is offloaded.
  • Cervical myelopathy: one might or might not experience neck pain. Fine motor activities like buttoning the shirt, and tying shoelaces could be difficult to perform.
  • Cervical radiculopathy: such a condition leads to radiating pain depending on the nerve root that has been compressed.

Often on examination by a physiotherapist, the person might have extreme pain during movements, and trigger points (often referred to as knots) in the neck muscles like the trapezius, paraspinal and periscapular muscles. You can experience:

  • Headaches
  • Grinding sound while performing neck movements
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscular pain
  • Stiffness
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Limited range of motion in performing certain movements

LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS

Degenerative changes around the lumbar spine and its facet joints lead to a condition called lumbar spondylosis It is often a long-standing (chronic) and non-inflammatory condition. Lumbar spondylosis is an age-related condition that often accompanies low back pain.

There are a multitude of factors responsible for lumbar spondylosis like

  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD)
  • Lumbar canal stenosis (LCS)
  • Lumbar spine osteoarthritis

Things you can do to ease your pain:

There are plenty of options you can opt for to work on your pain. When feeling a lot of pain, do some got fermentation over the affected area, it would help to soothe out pain to an extent. Practice correct postural techniques and engage in physical activities. Change positions every 15-20 minutes, if your work requires long working hours being immobile. When sitting or lying down, choose a pillow or mattress that is firm enough and not too soft. Firm support keeps the spine erect and stable, without placing undue stress on joints and muscle structures.

Lifestyle modifications are important in a great run for the sustainability of the treatment in a long run.
